Guarding Your Heart Through Forgiveness

Jesus makes forgiveness a heart issue in Mark 11:25. He tells us that when we stand praying, if we hold anything against anyone, we must forgive. Not because they earned it. Not because they apologized. Not because they even care. But because unforgiveness quietly builds walls inside our hearts.

Forgiveness is often misunderstood as letting someone “off the hook,” when really it’s about taking ourselves off the hook. The person who hurt you may be completely unaware. They may have moved on. They may not lose sleep over it at all. Meanwhile, the pain keeps replaying in your spirit, weighing you down, stealing your peace. God never meant for us to carry that burden.

When we forgive, we release control and place the situation back into God’s hands. We’re saying, “Lord, I trust You to handle what I can’t.” And something powerful happens in that surrender — God begins healing the places we couldn’t fix ourselves. He softens our hearts. He removes bitterness. He replaces anger with peace and sometimes even compassion.

Unforgiveness hardens us. It clouds our joy. It limits the love God wants to pour through us. That’s why He calls us to let it go — not to protect the offender, but to protect our hearts. God desires hearts that are light, loving, tender, and free. A heart filled with grace has room for His presence. A heart weighed down with grudges struggles to feel His peace.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean the hurt didn’t matter. It means God matters more. It means freedom is worth more than resentment.

And every time we choose to forgive, we grow closer to God’s character — because forgiveness is one of the clearest reflections of His love.

Let God carry what wounded you. Release it. Trust Him with it. And watch Him grow something beautiful where pain once lived.

Reflection Question: Is there a past hurt or a specific person you are keeping "on the hook" in your mind? How can you actively hand that situation over to God today to protect your own heart and walk in true freedom?
