Stop Worshiping the Problem: Why Your Stumbles Aren't the End
The Big Idea
Mistakes and worries only consume you when you stare at them. Fix your eyes on God, trade anxiety for worship, and step into the hopeful future He built for you.
Think About This
It's so easy to spiral when you mess up or when life gets overwhelming. You get a bad grade, drop the ball in front of your friends, or start stressing about where your life is heading, and suddenly that one issue takes over your entire mind. But here’s the reality check: whatever holds your constant attention is what you’re actually worshiping. When you obsess over a mistake or worry endlessly about a situation, you magnify the problem instead of the God who holds the solution.
Psalm 34:9 and Jeremiah 29:11 promise that when we focus on God, we have everything we need because His plans for us are anchored in hope and a secure future. And when you inevitably stumble along the way? Psalm 147:11 shows us that God’s heart isn't about condemning you. Success in faith isn't about never falling—it's about how many times you let God pull you back up. Shake off the shame, trade your worry for praise, and trust that your story is far from over.
Family Activity: The "Worry Trade" Flashlight Exercise
Turn off the lights in a room so it’s completely dark.
Have everyone take turns shining a flashlight beam directly at a tiny spot on the floor (this represents hyper-focusing on a worry or a past mistake). Notice how dark everything else around you feels when you only stare at that spot.
Now, point the flashlight straight up at the ceiling to illuminate the whole room!
While the light is pointing up, share one worry or past stumble you’ve been dwelling on, and declare a truth from Jeremiah 29:11 out loud (e.g., "I'm stressing about this test, but I choose to trust that God holds my future").
Close in prayer, asking God to help everyone keep their eyes fixed upward this week.
