Secret Code for Joy and Freedom

The Big Idea

Real happiness comes from thanking God for what we have, and real freedom comes from letting go of mad feelings!

Think About This

Have you ever felt super upset because a friend got a toy you wanted, or because someone accidentally broke your favorite pencil? It’s easy to feel jealous or hold a grudge! But God gives us two amazing secrets to help our hearts stay happy. First, Paul tells us in Philippians 4:11 and 1 Timothy 6:6 that true contentment—being totally happy with what we already have—is like finding hidden treasure. When we stop wishing for everyone else's stuff and thank God for ours, our hearts feel full and peaceful.

Second, when someone hurts us, holding onto that anger is like carrying around a heavy, dirty backpack all day! In 1 Corinthians 13:5 and Luke 23:34, Jesus shows us a better way. Even when He was treated unfairly on the cross, Jesus prayed for the people who hurt Him. Forgiving someone doesn't mean what they did was okay, but it lets you take off that heavy backpack and give it to God so you can run around free and happy!

Family Activity: The "Heavy Backpack & Gratitude Swap"

  1. Grab a small backpack and fill it with heavy books or stones.

  2. Have everyone take turns carrying it while trying to do a simple task, like doing jumping jacks or giving high-fives. Talk about how holding onto anger or jealousy feels just like that heavy bag!

  3. Put the backpack down. Now, take turns shouting out three things you are thankful for today.

  4. End with a short family prayer, giving any leftover mad feelings to God and thanking Him for His gifts.
