Antidote to Pride
Scripture Reading:
"Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had." — Philippians 2:3–5 (NLT)
"Pride leads to destruction, and a haughty spirit leaves to a fall." — Proverbs 16:18 (NLT)
"Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude." — 1 Peter 3:8 (NLT)
Pride is one of the most destructive forces in our relationships, and it rarely shows up in obvious ways. More often, it disguises itself as harsh criticism, relentless competition, stubbornness, or a superficial need to impress others. As Scripture warns us, the bigger our egos grow, the harder and more painful our ultimate fall will be.
Thankfully, God provides a powerful remedy: humility. True humility isn't thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less and choosing to elevate others around you. This kind of selfless heart doesn't happen by sheer willpower alone—it grows naturally when we surrender control to Jesus and invite Him to shape our thoughts, transform our hearts, soften our attitudes, and guide our daily reactions. When we let the Savior lead our lives, pride loses its grip, making space for deep, loving, and lasting connections to thrive.
Reflection Question: In what specific relationship or situation this week can you choose to surrender your need to be right and practice Christlike humility instead?
