Scripture Reading
"Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude." — 1 Peter 3:8 (NLT)
Listening with true Christian love means focusing completely on feeling what another person is experiencing, rather than formulating our next clever response while they speak. We must remember that hurting people often lash out and hurt others with their words. When someone gets defensive or sharp, their anger is usually a mask covering up deep insecurity, fear, or frustration.
Instead of taking their reaction personally or rushing to defend ourselves, we are called to look beyond their words to the pain beneath. Jesus models a higher way—one that chooses humility and tenderhearted kindness over getting in the last word, proving a point, or getting even. Extending grace in those tense moments softens hearts and opens the door for real reconciliation. Today, choose to pause, listen deeply, and offer the same unconditional grace and understanding that Christ freely extends to us.
Reflection Question: When a conversation gets tense this week, how can pausing to consider the other person's hidden pain help you respond with humility instead of defense?
