Dropping the Defense
One day, every excuse we’ve made for our behavior will be exactly what it is—an excuse. Scripture reminds us that each of us will give an account of our own life before God. Not our intentions, not our justifications, not the reasons we thought made sense at the time—but how we actually lived, and who we chose to live for.
God’s direction for our lives really isn’t vague. Over and over again, the Bible points us away from self-centered living and toward something far richer. Jesus makes it unmistakably clear: when we cling to our own comfort, control, and self-interest, we actually lose the very life we’re trying to protect. But when we surrender—when we give ourselves away in love and service—we discover what it truly means to be alive.
It’s striking that Jesus repeats this truth five different times in the Gospels. That alone tells us how important it is. He knows how easily we drift back to thinking life is about me—my needs, my rights, my plans. But God is patiently teaching us a better way. A freer way. A fuller way.
God wants us to learn how to love and serve others without strings attached, without keeping score, without asking what’s in it for us. That kind of unselfish living isn’t always easy, but it’s where real life is found. And in the end, that’s what will matter most—not the excuses we made, but the love we lived.
Reflection Question: What is one "justification" or excuse you have been holding onto regarding how you treat someone or how you spend your time? How can you lay that defense down today and choose instead to give yourself away in unselfish love?
