Staying in Step
There is a profound, life-changing depth packed into the words of Jesus when He speaks about what it truly means to be a disciple. He doesn't offer a vague philosophy; instead, He gives us a direct, action-oriented strategy for our daily lives. Look at what He says in John 12:26:
"Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."
Right here, God is presenting us with a clear choice for spiritual growth. He is a loving Father, not a dictator, which means He will never force growth upon us. He honors our free will. But once we make the conscious, deliberate choice to say, "Yes, Lord, I want to grow," we must follow through. Discipleship isn't a one-time decision; it is a daily commitment to stay in step with Him.
Notice the order of Jesus' words: to serve Him, we must follow Him, and to follow Him, we have to be where He is. This is a radical call to intimacy. It means being with Jesus through daily prayer, authentic conversation, and quiet listening. It’s about tearing down the wall between our "spiritual life" and our "everyday life" and making God an active partner in everything we do. Whether you are driving in your car, sitting in a meeting, or folding laundry, you are inviting Him into that space. When we choose to walk that closely with Him, spiritual growth becomes the natural byproduct of just being in His presence.
Reflection Question: What does it look like for you practically to "be where Jesus is" today? How can you consciously invite Him into the ordinary, routine moments of your day to keep that conversation going?
