Finding Freedom from Unhealthy Shame
Scripture Reading
"Guard my life and rescue me; do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you." — Psalm 25:20 (NLT)
We all make mistakes, and feeling that temporary sting of disappointment is actually a healthy part of being human. Healthy shame simply alerts us to our flaws and limitations, serving as a gentle, necessary reminder that we cannot do this life alone—we desperately need God.
The danger comes when that temporary disappointment twists into self-punishment. When we start hating who we are rather than addressing what we did, healthy shame transforms into a poisonous lie. Toxic shame convinces us that our mistakes define our worth, driving us away from the very grace that heals us.
Never forget who you are in Christ. Your identity isn't rooted in your missteps, but in God's unending love. You are His redeemed, cherished child. When guilt threatens to overwhelm you, take refuge in Him and rest in your rightful place at His table.
Reflection Question: Is there a mistake from your past that you are allowing to define your identity today instead of relying on God's grace?
